TiVo De-lists Series3 Boxes From the Online Store

TiVo's removed their Series3 DVR from the main shop, leaving only the TiVo Series2 at $150 and TiVo HD at $300. What's the upshot of this? To us, it seems like they're either phasing out the Series3 entirely in favor of the cheaper-to-produce TiVo HD, or they're liquidating the units for an upcoming Series4 featuring all those bad ass things we wanted. If you still adamantly want a TiVo Series3, you'll have to look elsewhere, since the entry buried deep inside the store is out of stock. [TiVo via Engadget]

TiVo Getting YouTube Streaming TODAY

TiVo's YouTube player that was announced back in March is finally going live today and will allow streaming, yes streaming, of all H.264 YouTube videos. It's a major part of the 9.4 Summer Update that is hitting all boxes by the end of this month. Even though all boxes are receiving this update only Series 3 and HD TiVos will be able to see the YouTube feature, sorry Series 2'ers. We haven't gotten a hands on yet but we've been briefed on how it will function and it actually sounds usable. Video and Press Release after the jump.

TiVo 9.4 Summer Update Hitting Boxes This Month

It looks like TiVo's 9.4 Summer Update has been released ahead of schedule and will supposedly be hitting every box by month's end. This update brings six new features, two of which actually seem really useful for most TiVoers. Folders will now have the option to be played or deleted, and the guide can be viewed at any time (while watching live TV, a recording, or even a download, but obviously not during menus). Since TiVo's 9.4 priority page hasn't been posted yet this update should hit your box as a total surprise while you're sleeping. [Zatz Not Funny!]

TiVoRemote App Updated with Slick GUI and Handy Features

TiVoremote, the iPhone / iPod touch Telnet TiVo Remote app, was finally updated a few weeks ago with an ooey gooey GUI, and some really useful new features. Now at version 0.23, the app can now detect TiVos on your home network, allowing for easy selection of the TiVo you want to control. What's even better is the app now has the ability to download the Now Playing list data from the TiVo, allowing the iPhone to show what's been recorded and display each recordings data info. The app can also use the NPL data to start playing the recordings automatically. So if you've got a Jailbroken iPhone / iPod touch, and a Series 3 TiVo, I would suggest giving the app a try, it's surprisingly useful. [TiVoRemote]

Australia Gets TiVo Minus the Subscription Fees

The Seven Media Group is so excited to distribute TiVos in Australia before the Beijing Olympics (and worried about fierce regional competition) that they're actually offering the boxes with full service sans subscription fees. If you ask the average non-TiVo user why he/she uses an alternative DVR, 9 out of 10 people will probably point to recurring costs. Even with TiVo's lifetime subscription back in action, the company still asks for a lot of money to provide basic DVR services. At long last, the SDV dongles that TiVo promised would arrive this year from Motorola and Cisco have been submitted to CableLabs for formal testing. For those unfamiliar, these little devices allow for two way communication between CableCard boxes and Cable Companies, so that only the needed programming data is sent, and bandwidth is conserved. Media Center's Do Not Record Broadcast Flag Is Still Alive

Recently, some Windows Media Center owners were blocked from recording American Gladiators and Medium because of an incorrectly set broadcast flag from NBC. What's the deal here? The broadcasters (NBC, ABC, HBO) can turn on a flag in their data stream that tells whatever DVR machine on your end that it's NOT alright to record a show, protecting Pay-Per-View or premium channel content from being archived.
