Special Dongle De-Bricks Dead Wiis, Loads Any Homebrew

Internally, Nintendo uses a tool called a "Waikiki adapter" to boot Nintendo Wiis in recovery mode—bricked or not. Now one modder has apparently duplicated the device, a simple flash drive that fits in the GameCube memory port of the Wii, and set a demonstration to some righteous 80s guitar riffs. If commercialized, not only could such a device make homebrew a whole lot less risky—it could usher in a whole new era of Wii piracy as you can load any code you want from this recovery menu...which would be horrible and awful and evil, of course. Tru2way TVs from Panasonic and Sony, Live For the First Time

Fans of Giz Explains know that Tru2way is the cable industry's latest cable card scheme. Today, Sony and Panasonic are showing off their own Tru2way-enabled TVs, Pana's PZ80Q with a built-in box, and Sony's Bravia with a box that connects via HDMI. What's cool is that this is the first time their showing it connected live to the cable company's head-end, and as you can see from the video and shots below, it works pretty well. Bonus: Samsung is showing off a different Tru2way interface, also connected to Comcast, though without full video-on-demand capability. Photos of that below. More »

We've known Amazon and Sony's VOD plans since they were in diapers, but today Amazon has introduced their promised instant-view capabilities to their Video on Demand service for both Macs and PCs, and rolled out a beta for Sony Bravia Link owners to start testing—allowing you to pair your TV with your Amazon account for instant purchases and rentals. Your purchases are also automatically added to "Your Video Library" for instant streams from any web browser. [Amazon]

Comcast's Video Download Store Is Wholly Unremarkable

Comcast's internet video site, Fancast, used to be a place to check out Hulu clips and waste away your data cap along with your brain. Now it's a place to buy and rent full-length movies a la Amazon Unbox or iTunes to play on your Windows PC (and up to two other authorized computers). Filled with the same $3.99 rentals and $13ish purchases, we wouldn't be writing about this service if Comcast weren't behind it...hopefully with plans to improve things down the line. Miele's New Giant Fridge Can Double as a Morgue

I don't know if these fridges are the norm in the US, but it seems to me like Miele's latest giganormous fridge from their Master Cool line—shown here at IFA 2008—has to be the biggest fridge ever available to megalomaniac consumers and potential serial killers. They should christen it The Walk-In Fridge, because this thing is so big that you can fit a cow inside. So huge in fact that I won't be able to put it in my apartment's living room. Blaupunkt Travel Pilot N700 Overlays Directions on Live Video, Reads Street Signs

In the last few months car navigation systems have seen a variety of enhancements, from aerial photography to 3D city modeling to live traffic data and internet connectivity. None, however, have done live video. The Travel Pilot N700 has a small camera stuck on the back of the windshield-mounted unit that feeds live video on which navigation instructions are superimposed. The unit also features voice control, live traffic info, WLAN and Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to read and warn of traffic signs with the integrated camera. Xbox 360 Goes Coin-Op

While the Xbox 360 arcade is ironically the least expensive version of 360, The Arcade Station T2 is the probably the most expensive...and it actually belongs in an arcade. Essentially an arcade cabinet housing an Xbox 360, the Arcade Station T2 features two controllers, memory card slots and system link gaming (which we're assuming means local multiplayer, not full LIVE access). Potentially bundled games could include Halo 3, FIFA 08, Assassins Creed and Devil May Cry 4, but players won't need to shove in more quarters every time Master Chief gets teabagged. Sony's Cybershot T500 Digital Camera Shoots HD Video Too

As we saw in the Sony IFA 2008 Liveblog, these new Sony Cybershot digital 10.1 megapixel cameras also shoot HD video (720p, though that's not mentioned in the press release.) The T500 has a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with 5x optical zoom, 3.5-inch touchscreen, eight-person face tracking, and something called "Double Anti-blur" technology which combines high sensitivity (for fast shutter times) with optical image-shake reduction. It can also connect directly to your HDTV and do slideshows, music and video shows without needing a PC. It's due October, price info still to be announced. Press release below. More »
