The best low end typwriters can be found at garage sales. I have a few absolutely beautiful Coronas, Royals, and the like displayed in my "dead tech" museum. Besides being loud, heavy, and nearly useless, they sure are pretty.
BWGunner

I still keep a typewriter in my house, you know, in case all three of the computers and printers die at the same time, or in case I have to fill out 25 job applications. It's a panasonic somethingorother with an LCD screen, i dunno, I picked it up an estate sale. My cat likes lying on it.
rickgrx

I applied to an Ivy-League using a paper application that wouldn't let you computer-print your personal essay (paranoia about buying the things off the net, probably).

So what'd I do?

Used my 1935 Royal Junior Portable Typewriter, of course.

On my application as a hopeful Comp. Sci. Major.

I got accepted, too. The best part? The point of my essay was that I was crazy. So yes, you're definitely onto something.

(This earned me my comment wings. Dandy.)
Operator23

Back when I was a magazine editor, the most fun we ever had was when we did our annual 'computer magazine parody' issue. Writing and answering the crank 'letters to the editor' for that issue usually involved not much more than digging deep into our real-world mailbag for the deepy disturbed loonies, and tweaking a few words to disguise the writers' identities.
But as far as typewriter love goes, I adore my 13-year-old IBM Model 55 computer keyboard simply because it feels the same as an old IBM Selectric typewriter. mmmmm... clicky, buttery smoothness.
airship

All branches of the bank I work for (over 2,000 branches) have an electric typewriter....If the computers go down and I have to get a Corporate Order (not sure of the American term? Draft? Bank Check?) out to close a mortgage deal or complete some forms that HAVE to be typed/printed....The model we currently have is from about 1990 but it still has a maintenance contract, just in case!
KsprayDad

We still use them at our office for forms that require you type on to the original form. The big problem these days is getting typewriters repaired since there is nearly no one left that will service them.
Monty
